A Look Ahead

In most cases, premature babies become healthy children and normal, and eventually adults, similar to their peers. No expertise on the subject allows you to walk down the street and to identify all passers-by who were born prematurely.

By cons, some premature babies will have long-term sequelae or even life. The probability that this is the case with any premature baby depend on the degree of prematurity and low birth weight, and if the baby had complications that increase the risk of problems in childhood and adulthood .

Over the last decades of the twentieth century, the survival rate of premature babies has increased incredibly. While we can rejoice in the lives saved and the triumph of knowledge, skills, and medical technology, the success has had a price for some. Many premature babies who would not have survived in the past are struggling with any disability.

Generally, these babies grow up with cerebral palsy, mental disabilities, low vision, a chronic lung disease, or learning disabilities. Although these conditions, and other conditions, in no way implies that these children will be unable to enjoy life and they will not grow in their own way, some premature babies have very restrictive lives that will require constant care even for basic needs. These babies are faced with a difficult quality of life that does not improve, perhaps with time.
