How do children learn?

The learning process is complex and depends on many factors. Know the conditions that facilitate this process allows parents to create an environment conducive to learning such as reading, writing, etc..

Motivation

The key driver of learning is motivation. When we are motivated, children and adults, our brain is a chemical state in favor of new knowledge: the maximum attention is, the mind is sharp and experiences are stored permanently. Except in special cases, toddlers are naturally motivated to learn. They seek to control their environment and learn ever more autonomy.

Pleasure

Pleasure is the natural companion of motivation. For children and adults alike, discover new abilities is a source of pleasure. This positive emotion acts as an element that enhances the acquisition and makes it sustainable. This effect explains why, in kindergarten, most knowledge is acquired through play, which always contains a dimension of fun.

Curiosity

Curiosity, a characteristic well developed in infants, grows in the discovery and forget the effort required to do so. Children are often curious earlier because they like being exposed to many new experiences, physical or intellectual.

The variety

You will promote learning by providing the child with varied environments and situations. Besides the accumulation of different experiences, the variety also allows the child to make comparisons leading to the deduction of logical principles that will gradually organize their thoughts.

The concentration

Concentration is the ability of children to concentrate on a task in isolation from its environment. The time of maximum concentration of a child increases with age: fifteen minutes to three to four years, twenty minutes to five, thirty minutes to seven, forty minutes at the age of ten. For this reason, it is essential to school activities often vary. Beyond its time of maximum concentration, the child tired, and he no longer listens and feels the urge to move or to let his mind wander.

Storing new information is also favored by its association with information already acquired, sensations, gestures or emotions. Finally, a regular and sufficient sleep helps memory: during the night, the brain analyzes and stores the day's experiences.

A link with reality

Relate learning to the world and lived with the child can more easily take ownership of new knowledge. It is more sensitive to concrete examples that make the theoretical knowledge more digestible and understandable.

Learn for yourself

Better to let the child learn for himself also, to fend for itself, make mistakes and find solutions, making sure not to leave it too long in failure. By participating actively in their learning, the child assimilates the knowledge more easily.

Encouragement

A child who feels safe and trusts him, learn better. It is enhanced when we give a reward after a successful test: it is positive reinforcement. Sanctions are more likely to devalue the child, to consolidate its position in chess. If the reward has a positive effect, punishment tends to prevent the acquisition of new knowledge.
